CHMM® Requirements
All candidates for CHMM certification must have a baccalaureate degree (or higher) from an accredited college or university, plus at least 3 years of appropriate experience in the field of hazardous materials management. In addition, they must pass a rigorous multiple-choice examination developed by the Institute of Hazardous Materials Management which tests a candidate's ability to:
I. Recognize, Identify and Characterize Hazards of Materials
II. Assess Risks Related to Hazardous Materials
III. Mitigate and/or Eliminate Hazards of Materials
IV. Manage Impacts of Hazardous Materials on the Environment
V. Manage Impacts of Hazardous Materials on Human Health
VI. Ensure Regulatory Compliance
VII. General Management of Hazardous Materials, and Business Skills
Once the candidate has successfully completed these requirements, he/she must pledge to maintain the highest standards of integrity through the CHMM Code of Ethics, and must demonstrate continued competence by undergoing recertification every five years.
