Study Courses, Materials, and Professional Development Resources

Candidates need to be familiar with relevant laws and regulations, relevant scientific principles and their application, and best management practices. Many candidates attend overview courses or rely on self-study materials to prepare for taking the examination. IHMM does not require any specific type of exam preparation or training and the exams are not based on any single reference. The following resources are among those that may be helpful and this information is provided for the convenience of candidates. 

PUBLICATIONS

• Managing Hazardous Materials: A Definitive Text, Revised Edition, published by the Institute of Hazardous Materials Management (IHMM).

• Hazardous Materials Management Desk Reference (2nd Edition), published by the Alliance of Hazardous Materials Professionals (AHMP).

SELF-STUDY MATERIALS

• CertiStep CHMMprep V3.0 self-study CD-Rom program available from Datachem Software.

• CHMM Examination Study Guide™ self-study CD-Rom program available from the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE).

"LIVE" COURSES

• "Essentials of Hazardous Materials Management" course offered by the Alliance of Hazardous Materials Professionals (AHMP).

• Overview Classes and Courses offered at various universities or by AHMP chapters across the country.

• Continuing Education and Professional Development. Various organizations conduct training, education, conferences, seminars, Webinars, and other types of learning opportunities that provide good materials for those studying for the CHMM or CHMP examinations and current CHMMs and CHMPs with recertification Certification Maintenance Points (CMPs).

• IHMM does not review, accredit, or approve any courses or resources over others.

• IHMM does not supervise, authorize, accredit or approve any course, resource, or study material.

• Review materials and courses are optional, and candidates are not required to take an overview course in order to take the examination.

• IHMM application and exam fees DO NOT cover any course fees. Contact the course provider for registration and cost information.

• The Essentials of Hazardous Materials Management (EHMM) overview course developed by the Alliance of Hazardous Materials Professionals (AHMP) is primarily a refresher course, and does not cover all the material in the examination.

• Arrangements for courses must be made directly with the course provider. Contact the course provider for registration and cost information.

• Registering for an overview course does not automatically make you eligible to take the CHMM exam. You MUST file an application with IHMM.
