mANAGING HAZARDOUS MATERIALS
(© 2002, 720 pages, hardcover, $89/copy)
For use as a study guide or professional reference.

Hazardous materials management is a complex discipline requiring familiarity not only with chemical and biological hazards, but also demanding careful consideration of the legal, financial, organizational, and even moral implications of the task.

This unique text reflects both the breadth and the unity of the discipline. Each chapter is written by one or more experts, generally Certified Hazardous Materials Managers (CHMMs) in addition to their credentials in specialized fields. Careful editing and coordination has produced a readable and teachable text book that will help shape the discipline for years to come.

The book is divided into nine sections which successively build the definition of hazardous materials management. The first three sections cover technical topics, including the hazards of materials, impacts of hazardous materials, and management fundamentals.

The next four sections cover federal regulations (including CAA, CWA, EPCRA, FIFRA, RCRA, CERCLA, TSCA, AHERA, HTMA, HazCom, HAZWOPER, HSWA, etc.) as they relate to the manufacture, storage and transport of hazardous substances, workplace exposures, pollution prevention, and management of air emissions, water discharges, and solid waste.  These sections also describe how to plan for, respond to, report, and clean up releases of hazardous materials and similar emergencies.

The eighth section presents individual chapters on materials with special regulatory standards -- asbestos, lead, PCBs, pesticides, radioactive materials, stratospheric ozone depleting substances, and infectious substances, while the ninth section describes environmental management systems, such as ISO 14000, and the proper use of performance audits in overseeing hazardous materials management.
